Time & Date

About this tool

Unix time (also called epoch time or POSIX time) counts the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC, ignoring leap seconds. It's the standard way computers store and compare timestamps internally, regardless of timezone or calendar. This tool converts between epoch timestamps (in seconds, milliseconds, microseconds, or nanoseconds) and human-readable dates in any timezone.

Common time units in seconds

1 hour3,600
1 day86,400

Frequently asked questions

Why does Unix time start in 1970?

1970 was chosen somewhat arbitrarily by early Unix developers as a convenient recent “zero point” for the systems they were building at the time. It stuck as the universal standard.

What is the Year 2038 problem?

Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer will overflow on January 19, 2038, wrapping around to a negative number. Most modern 64-bit systems have already moved past this limit.

Does this tool send my timestamps anywhere?

No — all conversion happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Seconds-based timestamps for recent dates are 10 digits long; milliseconds are 13 digits, microseconds 16, and nanoseconds 19. This tool auto-detects the unit based on digit count.
