How to Convert CSV to a Markdown Table
Convert spreadsheet or CSV data into Markdown in a few steps:
- Paste your CSV or TSV data, copy a range from Excel or Google Sheets, or open a .csv/.tsv file.
- Confirm the delimiter and whether the first row contains headers.
- Choose the column alignment and optional formatting settings.
- Review the Markdown source and rendered preview.
- Copy the Markdown or download it as a .md file.
The conversion runs directly in your browser.
How Markdown Tables Work
A Markdown table uses pipe characters to separate columns and a row of dashes to separate the header from the data.
Example:
| Name | Role | | --- | --- | | Alice | Designer | | Bob | Developer |
Alignment is controlled by colons in the separator row:
Left: | :--- | Center: | :---: | Right: | ---: |
The converter creates this structure automatically.
CSV to Markdown Example
CSV input:
Name,Role,Location Ada Lovelace,Engineer,London Grace Hopper,"Rear Admiral, USN",Arlington
Markdown output:
| Name | Role | Location | | --- | --- | --- | | Ada Lovelace | Engineer | London | | Grace Hopper | Rear Admiral, USN | Arlington |
Quoted CSV values containing commas remain in a single Markdown cell.
When Is CSV to Markdown Useful?
CSV to Markdown is useful when moving tabular data from spreadsheets or exports into:
- GitHub README files
- Pull requests and issues
- Technical documentation
- Wikis and knowledge bases
- Changelogs and release notes
Markdown tables are designed for flat tabular data. Highly nested data, complex spreadsheet formatting, formulas, merged cells, and rich cell styling do not translate directly into a Markdown table.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paste data directly from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Spreadsheet ranges are usually copied as tab-separated values, which the converter can detect and turn into a Markdown table.
What if my CSV contains commas inside a cell?
Properly quoted CSV fields are parsed as one cell, so values such as "Smith, Jane" do not create an extra column.
What happens if a cell contains a pipe character?
Pipe characters are escaped as \| so they do not split the Markdown table into additional columns.
Can I center or right-align Markdown columns?
Yes. Markdown uses colons in the separator row to control left, center, and right alignment.
Does the first CSV row have to be a header?
No. Turn off “First row is header” and the converter can generate neutral column headings.
Is my CSV uploaded?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser.
