About this tool
Counting words, characters, and sentences by hand is slow and error-prone, but these numbers matter for meeting length requirements on essays, tweets, meta descriptions, and social media posts. This tool updates word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts live as you type, and estimates reading time based on an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute.
Common character limits
| Platform / field | Limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| Google SERP title | ~60 characters |
| Google SERP meta description | ~155–160 characters |
| SMS (single segment) | 160 characters |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
It's estimated at 200 words per minute, a commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed, rounded up to the nearest minute.
Why is my sentence count off for text with abbreviations?
Sentence counting looks for punctuation (., !, ?) followed by a space or end of text, so abbreviations like “Dr.” or “e.g.” can be miscounted as sentence breaks — a limitation of any punctuation-based sentence counter, not just this one.
Can I check the length of placeholder text?
Yes — generate placeholder text with the Lorem Ipsum Generator, then paste it here to check its word, character, and sentence count.
I need to reformat the text after counting it — can I do that here?
Not directly — use the Case Converter to change capitalization or naming style, then paste the result back here if you need updated counts.
